A Night Out in Abuu Dhabi

Friday, February 27th, 2009

First we went to the Emirates Palace Hotel for a party that Sotheby’s was throwing to showcase an auction of Middle Eastern art. There was some amazing art by local artists and a carpet made out of pearls (The Pearl Carpet of Baroda) that cost a mere 3.7 million bucks.

The Emirates hotel is huge (just the building is over half a mile long!) and wow is it impressive. It’s also quite beautiful, as you can see.

Next we went off to local party to watch the Oscars and had a blast. All in all it was a great night.

Jumeirah Beach Hotel

This is the view from the glass elevator in the Jumeirah Beach hotel where we were staying. On the way up to the 24th floor, we got a great view of the Burj Al Arab (Burj means “tower” in Arabic!) and the entire Jumeirah beach resort. The Burj Al Arab is the world’s only seven star hotel; even movie stars can’t afford to stay there! It was designed to look a sail and is built on a manmade island.

Fortunately, my hotel was much more fun, with really friendly staff, and the Wild Wadi Water Park .

I’m sorry if I look tired, but I had been on a plane all night! Thankfully I managed to get some rest and relaxation in on the beach before a packed a few days in the UAE.

Sheikh Zayed Mosque

Today we went to the Sheikh Zayed Mosque in Abu Dhabi and this place is amazing. It was built to honor Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al Nahyan (the founder of the UAE) by his sons when he died. It houses the world’s largest carpet and the world’s largest chandeliers! Most mosques in Abu Dhabi are closed to non-Muslims, but this one has been opened to everyone to promote religious tolerance, which is a great thing.

I was so humbled to visit this mosque because, firstly, it was a beautiful building and an awesome sight. Secondly, it was a wonderful opportunity to see a mosque. I had never done that before and I learned so much from the experience. Despite the crowds, it was a very holy place and it is so much better to learn about other cultures than simply to exist in a world of blind prejudice and ignorance.

Thirdly, it was amazing how so many people knew me. It was so cool. I was blown away by all the nationalities, and I love Abu Dhabi for being such a multinational country. It was also so cool for me to spread love and bring joy to all the people I met today. I am so lucky to be able to do that and truly blessed. I hope we all learn that it is love that brings us all together and can really make the world a better place.

Heathrow Airport

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

As I was leaving London and on my way to Dubai, I got a chance to talk to Richard Branson and ride in a buggy (the new KITT!) through the airport. This trip has had some good times so far; I know more are sure to come.

A Day of Radio and Television Shows

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

Today has been a busy day so far. I went to film a show called Loose Women, which is like the UK’s answer to The View. I had a great time there and really enjoyed meeting everyone there.

We also went to Radio 1 to visit Scott Mills. We wanted to get together to help get the word out about the amazing show we did together, which is going to air on Living TV (only in the UK for now) on April 6, 2009. It’s called The Hoff: When Scott Came to Stay and we think it’s an amazing show. So all you UK fans should watch!

Here’s just a small video to show you what the paparazzi are like in England. Enjoy!

Love and respect,

DH

The Brits!

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

I was asked to present the awards for Best British Group at the Brit Awards (it went Elbow) and it was absolutely AWESOME!

We were at a table with the stunning Natalie Imbruglia and the fantastically funny Simon Pegg. We met and saw everybody you could think of; Coldplay, Take That, Lionel Ritchie (who is a good friend of mine), The Kings of Leon, Girls Aloud, Tom Jones, and so many more. I went into the Ting Tings dressing room and talked to them for while, saw Duffy, got to interview Will Young, and see the biggest rock stars maybe ever, U2!

It was such a good time and I was really honored to be able to present at such a big awards show.

Interviewing Will Young at the Brits

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

Since Scott Mills and I are good friends, I couldn’t go to the Brits without stopping by to visit him as he was broadcasting live from backstage. We did a brief interview and Scott told me to stick around so that I could meet Girls Aloud and if any other celebrities came in, I should chat with them.

A good looking young man came in and looked just like a waiter. We started talking and it turned out her was Will Young, winner of the first ever UK Pop Idol show! The rest is on video here and I think it is something that needs to be watched, instead of told.

I will say though, that I simply could not resist asking Will Young what the specials were!
